picky eaters
Who knew that a one-year-old could be such a picky little booger? It was only a few weeks ago that Mason would eat whatever you handed him; and beg for more! Now all of a sudden, just when he really needs to be eating what I give him, he's decided he only likes certain things. Two weeks ago, he ate chicken nuggets no problem. Today, he took it from me and threw it on the floor. Two weeks ago, noodles were on the top of the list. Now, won't even open his mouth! What happened? Why now?? I was hoping to be rid of his bottle/formula around his birthday (which is on Saturday :)), but now I'm not certain he's getting what he needs from the food I offer. He'll always eat grilled cheese, yogurt and bananas. That's well rounded....right?? I know it isn't and it's freaking me out just a little! I haven't tried peanut butter yet, but it is next on my list. What else is there?? Occasionally he'll eat a bite of Brooklyn's hamburger, but he'd much prefer the fries!! Green Beans? NO WAY! I just don't know what to do! Any ideas? He's only 1! How could this be happening already?? And to my BOY! I thought boys ate everything!! I can't even coax Brooklyn with, "Mason's eating more than you, come on!" Usually, he isn't! I'll take any suggestions! Thanks in advance!

So, I don't have any suggestions, but I wanted to tell you that you aren't alone. My nephews hardly eat anything. My oldest nephew may be a picky eater, but he also has "no time" for food (at least he thinks he doesn't have time.) My sister gets very frustrated with their eating habits. However, my sister's daughter who just turned 1 will eat anything and go to anyone with food. So, I don't think gender has anything to do with eating habits. :) Okay, I am starting to write a novel...hope you find a way to get Mason to eat some more. :)
story of my life over here! :)
Hmmm we're working on that one as well, and I share the feelings of worry over the baby missing all her nutrition! But my pediatrician offered a couple of tips that don't do much for now, but over a few weeks time, we've noticed a slight increase in the amount of food Alyssa eats.
1- Always offer the food he won't eat. I was doing this anyway, but it's a good reminder to offer it to your baby, even if you know he won't eat it. He might surprise you one day!
2- Leave the food on his tray and go do dishes or something away from him and see what he does with it. For us, Alyssa just throws it on the floor or hands it right back. Not the most ideal response, but maybe someday she'll be curious enough to stick it in her mouth rather than watch gravity take it over.
I can't say we've had huge success, but Alyssa does eat a little more variety of food than when we started, so that's a start! I'll be checking back to see if you get any great tips, cuz we need them too!
Have you tried avocados? Ella has liked them since she was a baby and I know a lot of little ones really like them. They are really good for you.
I think you just have to keep offering and if they throw it down then they throw it down. I think he will work it out, a dr. told me once that you have to look at what a toddler (what mason will be after 1!!!) eats over a weeks time, not just one day.
It's frustrating when kids won't eat. Avery lives off of milk and fruit snacks. Just keep trying and trying and trying... Good luck!
I'll be the first to tell you that boys are picky eaters!!
I just offer them food anyway and I figure if they get hungry enough they'll eat it. The boys also have grilled cheese for like every meal, because that's about the only thing they will eat.
I hear ya. In fact Drew's gotten bad enough the doctor wants to do a height and weight check...UGH! If only candy and chips were a food group with nutritional value, I'd be set! Good luck with Mason!
I have no idea about how to get kids to eat... well eat the good food. Some days my kids will eat more than three complete meals and other days I wonder if they even got 200 calories down. Good luck with that... from what I hear just keep trying and eventually they will eat. I finally have a blog.... www.jankejungle.blogspot.com
Come and see!!
I'm going to be super optimistic for you- maybe it's "just a stage" :)
He'll probably eat nothing for a while and then you'll find things he loves again, only to have them switch in a week or two. Then back to the scramble to find out what he will eat.
Naomi wouldn't eat beans really or peas until I gave them to her whole, not baby food mashed. And frozen peas are fun- they thaw super fast, no worries that they'll be too hard.
Cheese cubes, blueberries, mandarin oranges, cottage cheese, grapes, applesauce, yougurt, chopped sandwich meat, - those are all on Naomi's "ok" list:)
Good luck!
I am so with you. Our boys are a mystery. Benjamin is doing the same thing lately. When you figure it out, let me know.
wow everyone has great comments for you...mostly I am just going to add yeah it doesn't get better with two! Lexie won't eat anything! Except of course saltine crackers, and sprite...you would think she has the flu--but no, right now that is her staple! So wierd!
Have you tried letting him feed himself? My girls seem to get to a point where they won't eat if I feed them but they'll eat if I put it in pieces on their tray for them to pick up and eat on their own. Katie will eat a lot more if I let her use utensils. She just loves practicing stabbing things with a fork that she'll eat things she wouldn't otherwise. And it may just be a little phase. They change so much so fast at these ages I'm sure you shouldn't be too worried :)
Wow this blog generated a ton of comments!
